Chronological Transformation Of Habitation And Vegetation in Jhargram District(2013,2018)

  1. Area of interest:Jhargram is a municipality and the administrative headquarters of Jhargram district located in the Indian state of West Bengal.
It is a popular tourist destination known for its forests. Jhargram is located at 22.45°N 86.98°E centrally. It has an average elevation of 81 metres (265 feet). The weather, like much of Bengal, is extremely humid and tropical.
  2. Sample size: Jhargram urban unit and the associated urban division have been selected for the concerned research project. The concerned assemblage has an area of 535 sq. km. approximately.
  3. Sample data: Initially the LANDSAT- 8 data is determined to be utilized as well as analysed for the project. The image has the Pixel size of 15 meters/30 meters/100 meters (panchromatic/multispectral/thermal) whereas Map projection is UTM (45N for Jahargram) and the Datum is WGS 84. The swath width is 185 kilometre
  4. Sample selection criteria:
    1. Inclusion criteria: The area is concerned with the picturesque amount of vegetation cover along with the urban components. As the concerned assemblage along with its outskirt area is experiencing a rapid urban growth it is of special interest to measure the sustainability of the forest cover in the concerned urban assemblage with respect to the urban growth;
    2. Exclusion criteria: The sample may be rejected to be justified if any significant observation cannot be found in maximum previous ten years chronological scale.
  5. Duration of the study: The research report is being prepared under the short term (two months) industrial training and research programme for academic realization. The entire tenure of the research is sharply two months.
  6. Study design:
    1. Visualization: The FCD maps are prepared for general visualization; the gravity centre of the urbanization is mapped to show the retention and distribution pattern of the associated forest cover.,
    2. Statistical: The zonation of the vulnerability or the sustenance is determined on the statistical reports.
  7. Data analytic procedure:
    1. General: The FCD values and the clusters are prepared with the help of AVI; the built up clusters are segregated; the correlation table are prepared for canopy density, bare ground, parcelled grounds and actual built up clusters; the clusters are validated with the help of other images possibly of high resolution; the tables are compared chronologically for at least two times in a ten years span; the centres of gravity of the urban growth are determined.
    2. Analytic: The proportional amount of vegetation and urban elements are measured; the correlation coefficient is then determined; the hypothesis is justified; the one tailed hypothetical testing may be applied in this case at a 95% confidence limit.

Expected result: The expected result is to define the rate of vulnerability in terms of increasing urban area with respect to the threshold value of filled areas. The result will justify whether the deforested areas are captured with urbanization with the stipulated threshold value or not. Only 50% area should be covered with the urban growth and the remaining 30% by the urban green and the rest 20% by the open parcels of land or others.

Vegetation Map

Forest density is a commonly collected attribute in management forest inventories. Forest density provides an indication of ecological attributes such as habitat potential, forest fragmentation, forest successional stage and regeneration success after a disturbance. Forest density is commonly applied as a stratifying attribute in models, such as those which estimate biomass or forest fire fuel types. As a consequence, density is included in the suite of attributes to be estimated from satellite data as a component of the NFI (et. al. Wulder).

Habitation Map

Main dictation of the study is the rate of vulnerability in terms of increasing urban area with respect to the forest area. Considering the Land cover components of the earth surface, the forestry and natural vegetation is one of the greatest influencing factors to determine the development of Land to be utilized for the human society.
Most important facets of this study area to demarcate the deforestation and vulnerable area of defragmentation.. So the main motto of this study is to conceive the Limit of Sustaining the concerned forest cover of a growing urban area.
